Blade Battery

One of the world's safest batteries.

The Blade Battery is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery developed by BYD through 29 years of innovation. Built to be stable, safe, and consistent, it has undergone over 3,000 safety tests, and passed every one of them.

What is the Blade Battery?

The Blade Battery is BYD's proprietary lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, shaped like a blade and slotted directly into the pack structure, eliminating the need for traditional modules. This cell-to-pack design makes the battery 50% more space-efficient than conventional packs while also serving as a structural component of the vehicle. The result is a battery that is lighter, stronger, and fundamentally safer than anything built around NCM chemistry.

The nail penetration test

The nail penetration test drives a steel nail through a fully charged cell to force a severe internal short circuit, the most extreme safety scenario a battery can face. NCM batteries typically catch fire or explode. The Blade Battery produces no smoke and no flames. Its LFP chemistry does not emit oxygen under stress, cutting off the conditions needed for thermal runaway. Surface temperature stays between 30°C and 60°C even under abuse, compared to over 500°C in competing chemistries.

Built to last

BYD rates the Blade Battery for over 5,000 full charge cycles, more than 10 years of daily driving before significant capacity loss. Capacity is guaranteed above 70% for 8 years or 250,000 km, whichever comes first. LFP chemistry relies on iron and phosphate rather than scarce cobalt or nickel, which keeps raw material costs lower and makes the battery more thermally stable over its entire lifespan.
